What is cycle speedway?

Basically it is speedway powered by pedals rather than engines. Races are over four laps on a shale track, contested by four riders on single gear bikes with no brakes

Leicester compete nationally in the country’s top league (the Elite League) as well as locally in the Midlands League in which they have teams in all three divisions, which means riders are able to race at the level which suits their current level of experience.

Riders under 18 can also race in the British Junior League which is run in two year age groups from under 8 up to under 18 so they will have the opportunity to race again riders of similar age and ability.

This is not just a sport for boys – there are separate girls competitions and Leicester are undefeated Ladies team champions.

How can I try cycle speedway?

We are always happy to welcome new riders, whatever your age. If you fancy having a go why not come down to our regular Tuesday or Thursday training nights which run from March through to October starting at 7.30. If you get in touch with the Club Secretary Tim Jarvis (see Contact Us page) first he will make sure you are looked after on your visit. Alternatively come and watch a match – admittance is free. Most matches are on Sundays with a 2pm start and full details can be found on the fixtures page.

Cycle speedway is a friendly sport – we are always happy to give training and advice to new members. Leicester has the current World Champion in their team, so you can be sure that you will be learning from the best!

What do I need?

We have plenty of bikes for you to use free of charge. All you need to do is wear a long sleeved top and trousers and gloves and bring your cycle helmet with you if you have one.

What then?

If you enjoy yourself you can then join the Club. We run competitions on a handicap basis for juniors on training nights so there is plenty of opportunity for racing for fun before you think about racing for any of our teams.
